(American Idol) KRIS OH KRIS.

I WASN'T going to watch Kris' performance until the show tonight, but I suceeded in getting up to vote this morning and couldn't stop myself from reading comments about the show. When I read about Simon's bus-throwing, and the fact that Kris went first, I got SO PISSED OFF. I really thought all the talk about the producers' plans for throwing Kris under a bus was just people being too imaginative. And just so I could confirm and know what I'm bitching about before I bitched about it, I watched Kris' performance online.

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU SIMON. That was the most comfortable Kris has looked the whole season without a guitar or without sitting behind a set of keyboards. That was also the best he's sang the whole season. THE WHOLE SEASON. Perfect pitch from note one, and once again he injected his feelings into the song. And this is coming from someone who LOVES Ain't No Sunshine and think that performance was utterly perfect. If there's such a thing as more than utterly perfect, his performance of The Way You Look Tonight COMPLETELY takes the cake.

SIMON, IF KRIS GOES HOME TOMORROW, YOU AND YOUR PRECIOUS SHOW WILL OFFICIALLY BE DEAD TO ME. If Kris leaves this week, I swear I'm DONE with this season. I won't even care about Adam anymore; he's bonus for me, the side dish to the main course that is Kris Allen. I can never do without a main course, but I usually tend to skip the side dish.

I can't believe they really went there. I can't believe Kris got bussed tonight. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT. My only consolation right now is that David Cook also got bussed last year, immediately after his best performance of the season (in my opinion, that is), The World I Know, on finale night; Simon basically said Archie was gonna win, but Cookie turned it around and WON IT.

I really, REALLY hope Kris makes it to the Top 4.

I just watched it again and I LOVE the falsetto on the last note. This is his most varied vocal the whole season, and Simon said he wasn't even trying? SIMON COWELL YOU'RE FREAKING DEAF THIS WEEK, YOU ARE.

Okay, I don't know what Simon actually said because the video on Krisallenation.com doesn't have the judges' comments; I'm just bitching based on what I'm reading about the feedback Kris got. And I think I might have to declare my love for Kara DioGuardi for calling Kris the Dark Horse of the competition - which he totally is, which Simon totally missed.

SIGH. Like I said, I hope Cook Redux happens. Last year David's fans were so pissed at Simon's comments that they (we!) went into a voting rampage. Of course, that wasn't the only reason David Cook won, but I think it probably helped a little. And this isn't even about Kris winning; it's about him getting through to the next round. I hope his fans voted like mad. I know I did - or tried. I had to go to school in the morning to meet a professor, but before that I voted on my handphone, and after the meeting I continued voting on my handphone until my battery died, and when I got home I voted on Gizmo (they switched to the West Coast time zone so it's 12 noon now) until the lines closed, and in the process my Gizmo crashed a few times.

Well, I guess if Kris leaves this week he can take comfort in the fact that he has both David Cook and Chris Daughtry in his corner. My darling David likes Kris and Adam this season, while Daughtry apparently Twittered that he loves Kris' performance this week. I don't like Daughtry but he's always cited as an Idol success so whatever, I'll take whatever positive thing I can get.

SO worried for Kris. SO checking spoilers tomorrow morning.

I HATE THIS SHOW. I hate getting invested in a contestant. And this time round, my horse doesn't have the fanbase or the support of a frontrunner. My horse is a DARK HORSE. I hate this!

Poster at Kris' thread on TWoP:

Okay, that was just infuriating. I really don't believe that Simon was trying to motivate people to vote for Kris. It seems clear what's going on: Kris is the only one capable of derailing the whole Adam/Danny F2 train. For whatever reason, Simon desperately doesn't want Kris to win, so he deflated all of the praise with his "based on tonight, you can't win" comment. Simon also didn't give Allison the praise she deserved. Matt only hit about 30 percent of his notes, I couldn't understand a word he was singing most of the time amd he was by far the worst of the night. So Simon over-praised Matt hoping he will advance to F3 where he doesn't have a shot at making it to the finals. Kris is a serious threat to the Master Plan, and Simon's comments (along with having Kris sing first) were meant to address that threat.

Knoll-ish? Perhaps. But once again, Kris turned in a fantastic performance, and once again, he didn't get the unanimous, unambiguous praise he deserved. I think at this point he has strong prospects at a great career, and there is certainly a strong fan base out there, but if he does lose this thing, I'd at least like to believe he got a fair shot. "Based on tonight," I [can't] say that he did.

Why, WHY do I keep watching this stupid show? Pray tell, WHY?

Kris is second-last on DialIdol. I take consolation in the fact that, if it'd been right every week, Kris would've gone three weeks ago. So far he hasn't even hit bottom 3, so there's still hope. Flimsy, fragile hope - but hope nonetheless.

And after reading what someone said about what Kris said in his intro package about not being able to compete with the others vocally? I just want to send him a post card and tell him to stop being stupid and realise what a great voice he has. Sure, he can't do the glory note thing like Adam and Allison (well, not so much her; I think she's pretty limited too) and I suppose Danny though I wouldn't know 'cause I don't pay attention to him, but he's at least coherent, which automatically puts him above Matt; more importantly, his voice is more pleasant than Adam's purely based on the tone and quality, and he interprets the songs better than Danny and Allison, and in the "artistry" department, he has THEM ALL owned. Including Adam. Adam will still win, and I still will be okay with that, but Kris not making final 2 is just plain. fucking. WRONG. And Kris believing Simon's bullshit about Danny being the other best voice of the competition? It makes me so mad. And the fact that he was hurt by Simon's "indulgent" comment to his All She Wants To Do is Dance performance? I JUST WANT TO HUG HIM.

My dear Pocket Idol, you have no idea just how damn good you are, and I feel like sending you a post card to tell you how damn freaking GOOD you are. For you, I will say "kick awesome" instead of "kick ass" and I promise I will say "oh my gosh" in place of the other one I'm used to saying until you make the final 2.

And seriously, what was the utility in Simon telling Kris he can't win, based on tonight or not? Was it to maintain some sort of a facade that this season hasn't already been won? In which case, all I can say is, STOP TRYING. We all know Adam has this in the bag, and the real competition is for the runner-up spot. Obviously Kris can't win; even I don't think he can. But he CAN make runner-up, if people like Simon would just cut him some slack and give him a break. I really don't understand why Danny is able to get away with crappy performances week after week, barring this week as I haven't watched it yet, but Kris puts in solid-to-amazing performances week after week and is consistently denied of the praise he deserves. This show is as hokey as Gokey. UGH.

Need to stop obsessing over this and get started on my paper that's due on Friday. Shit, if Kris gets eliminated tomorrow, there's no way I'd get it done in time 'cause I'd be obsessing over TWoP and reading everything I can on him. SHIT. HE BETTER STAY. HE MUST.

American Idol: Top 5 Rant, Part Two

I watched the show on Star World 'cause I wanna watch my Roger match later (clashes again with Idol - hate it when this happens) and...OH MY GOSH (refer to my promise to Kris in my previous entry) I WANT TO THROTTLE THE SHOW SO BADLY.

1. Before I begin, I take back some of my rant against Simon. What he said about Kris wasn't all that bad per se; but it becomes aggravatingly DISGUSTING when it's taken in context of the other performances. Was Kris the best of the night? No, he wasn't; that accolade goes to Adam, as usual. But was Kris not in it to win? Of course he wasn't. And I'm sorry, but I just don't see how DANNY or even MATT was in it more to win tonight than Kris. I don't see how Danny and Matt were any safer than Kris with their choices. In fact, I honestly think that Kris took way more of a risk than all of them combined by singing the song straight. No tinkerings, just letting his vocals and his amazing knack for connecting with the song via his phrasing and his interpretation shine. And because of that? He was the second best of the night for me.

2. I only liked Kris, Adam and Allison. Even with Allison, though, I felt it was a tad more of the same. She did display more tenderness and vulnerability tonight which was refreshing, and once again, I haven't the slightest clue what the fuck Simon smoked today. I don't know.

3. Again, Simon is on crack. Matt was brilliant? I'm sorry, WHAT? I didn't understand 80% of what he was singing. It was partly the song - I've heard My Funny Valentine on Idol numerous times but until now, I still have no idea what it sounds like. But Matt? Matt didn't make it any easier for me to understand the melody. He was all over the place, he was one hot mess, and Simon called it "brilliant". You have GOT to be shitting me, and I say this as someone who doesn't even dislike Matt. I'd rather keep him over Danny, and sometimes I'd even rather keep him over Allison. He was just awful this week, and Simon sucks ass for praising crap.

4. The most offensive? The incessant, unabashed, unapologetic, and blatant favouritism shown to Danny Gokey. I read the positive reviews of his performance online and I honestly watched the episode with an open mind. I honestly put aside all my hatred for him and tried to listen out for the brilliance that was apparently his performance. I tried, hell I tried so damn valiantly, and he got me in the first ten seconds...but after that, he lost me. Completely. Once again, no idea what the fuck he was singing, and towards the end he bulldozed through the song. He was screaming, he still looked smarmy even in a suit, and I honestly, HONESTLY don't see what the hell was so good about it. None of it was memorable, except the screaming, but that was more Memorably Bad than anything. And Simon praised that?

Simon, I so divorce you after tonight. What the fuck are you on? The top 3 this week are clearly Adam, Kris and Allison, in that order, followed by Danny and Matt. In what universe was Matt's incoherent and unintelligible performance any more gutsy or worthy of winning than Kris'? In what alternate universe does Danny possess more swagger than Kris? Do you just think Kris has no swagger because he's short? Because, what the hell, he's never displayed so much confidence on stage without his guitar/keyboards. Ever.

And Randy's shit about how Danny can put out a record filled with rat pack-esque songs? Perhaps he's right, but who's gonna buy it? There's a good reason why songs like that have gone out of style. No disrespect to that genre of music and the greats that sang it, but the truth is, it's just no longer in fashion. If that shows how dated and not-current Gokey is, then, yes, I totally agree, but I still maintain that there is nothing commercially-appealing about Gokey at all. Maybe he can make it in Contemporary Christian Music but I wouldn't know; I don't listen to that genre and I wouldn't know if that genre is receptive to douchebags.

SO ANNOYED TONIGHT. SO DAMN ANNOYED. And I just love Kris more than ever. I even feel indignant for Allison, and for the love of gosh, can Matt just leave already. Seriously. SERIOUSLY. Danny isn't going to leave this week, sadly, so...Matt, it's your time. It's been your time twice already; this time, you really have to go.

I've never liked Jamie Foxx as much as I like him today. He had nice things to say about everyone, as all the show's mentors do, but he was visibly genuinely excited and into...Kris. And only Kris. I never put much stock on the things they say about wanting to make a record with the contestants 'cause it's usually just talk, but the fact that he said that about Kris? I'll take that as something, thanks. And he was right about Kris, too. So was Kara tonight. Randy, well, I've written him off as irrelevant many seasons ago so he can say the nicest things about Kris and I STILL wouldn't care.

I hate this show. I really do. And yet, I still keep watching because I love it almost as much as I hate it. I can't even explain that right now so yeah, won't bother trying.

It's just...KRIS. Oh, Kris. Why did you have to be brilliant and pull me back into this? I was ready to be done after David was crowned last season, but you. YOU! My sweet, adorable, brilliant Pocket Idol. Oh, how I love thee.

And how sad I'd be if he really left this week.

The only thing that will mitigate the Idol travesty...

If Juan Monaco holds on to his serve for dear life in the deciding set, Andy Murray will be out of Rome in the second round.

If that really, REALLY happened? I would hurt a little bit less from the treatment Kris got this week.

Unfortunately, the stupid live scores stopped working on my laptop so I'm relying on the people on RF.com to keep me updated - which isn't super reliable. Better than nothing, I guess.

I don't really know Juan Monaco, but fuck that: GO JUAN MONACO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KICK MURRAY'S ASS!!!!!!!! I don't even mind that I'm 40 minutes late to watch Roger, IF this match ends well for me! Ha ha!

FUCK, Murray broke back. What the fuck is up with clay? It's a freaking BREAKFEST. Seriously.

UGH I HATE THIS HATE HATE HATE. WORST WEEK EVER. Roger better demolish Karlovic later on or I'd be even more depressed!

JUAN MONACO IS MY HERO OF THE FUCKING WEEK!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU JUAN MONACO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Rome 2009) Federer d. Karlovic 6-4, 6-4

In my opinion, any over Karlovic that doesn't involve a tie-break (or, worse, two tie-breaks. Or three tie-breaks) is a good win. Karlovic is known as The Tree because of his massive, imposing height. Standing at 6'10" (6"10'? I think it's the former right?), he undoubtedly has the advantage when it comes to the serve - as a result, he holds the ATP record for the most number of aces served in a match. It's a little over 50. Yes, 50-something aces in one match.

The problem with watching a Roger match with Karlovic (because I won't watch any other kind of Karlovic matches) is that it's mind-numbingly boring when Karlovic is serving well. Roger was fortunate to get the early break in both sets and all he had to do was to take care of his own serve - which he did pretty well - and try to sneak into Karlovic's service games and sniff out a few break points, or just one break point. Roger had a set point in the first on Karlovic's serve - which Karlovic quickly snuffed out with an ace.

And that, basically, is his schtick. If he's serving 3 aces in a game, you're not gonna break him - and so I think it was great that Roger broke him one set each and took the match comfortably. If it'd gone to a tie-break, or two, or THREE tie-breaks, it would definitely have been super laborious and I would just die of boredom. Because Karlovic is a one-trick pony - he serves. Really well. And that is all. His massive height also impedes his movement a lot, much like Yao Ming who's probably one of the most overrated NBA players ever - because of his height, he's a little less agile than most centres, and in the matches I've seen him play in, he's just lumbering around below the net, maybe trying to grab rebounds but being unable to because he's just not fast enough.

Same with Karlovic. He just couldn't handle Roger's power-packed, crisply-angled forehands (and wow, Roger, your forehand was ON today!). An inside-out forehand from Roger comes in Karlovic's direction, away from him, to the ad court, and he's standing somewhere in the middle of the court - and all he can do is stand there and watch as the ball bounces away from him. Yet another forehand winner from Roger Federer, and it's not really Karlovic's fault that he's so tall, such that he can't move as quickly as the other guys.

But then, he makes up for it with his serving. But whoever thought merely serving well, without the groundstrokes to back it up, can win you matches, let alone tournaments, should get his/her head checked. Maybe you can at the club level; but on the pro circuit? You can win maybe your first round matches in a compulsory event, but if you want to look for titles, seek out the lesser tournaments. You're not going to sniff at anything in the tournaments where all the big boys come out to play.

In any case, I said the same thing about Karlovic when he played Roger in Indian Wells, and I'm saying the same thing again. I don't see any difference in his game today as compared to Indian Wells: Big serve, out-aced Roger (15 was it? to Roger's 1 - and Roger's lone ace came really timely, on match point. I love him!), but completely broke down when it came to the groundstrokes. Even his volleys weren't that sharp. His backhand volleys looked okay, but more often than not, when Roger's trying to pass him, he'd just hit the ball out. Or Roger would just hit the ball directly at him and he'd hit it out.

So yeah, Karlovic isn't a good test for Roger. I don't think he's a good test for anyone, to be honest. Still, Roger played pretty okay today. He almost messed up his opening service game where he faced break point at 30-40, but he cleaned that up, and after facing two more break points in the first set and cleaning THAT game up perfectly, he pretty much coasted on serve. And that's even when he wasn't serving that great, as compared to the way he used to serve. Two double faults is a bit worrying, as is the 58% first serves, but well, he did what he had to do. A few times I felt he was at a practice session or something; some of the slower second serves, and the slower forehands, they felt like he was practicing.

Anyway, I'm glad he won comfortably. Now, I hope Stepanek loses to Lopez later because I have zero interest in watchign Stepanek. They repeated the Rome quarter-final last year where Roger made a shocking exit when he lost to Stepanek, and I watched the first set when I chanced upon it just to see why he lost. I thought maybe he played crap, but he actually played really solid. He had like three love service games in a row, and served much better in that set than he had in much of this year.

But he still lost. And he lost in two tie-breaks. I didn't watch the second set (was too tired and couldn't stand watching Stepanek's annoying victory antics) but in the first, Stepanek outplayed him just a little bit, and it was enough to get the job done. That pissed me off, especially when I finally saw the Mono Mark that all the fans freak out over when it looked like something was appearing on his face. It was this round pimple-looking thing on his cheek (forgot which side) that was somehow related to his mono; whatever it is, I was irrationally pissed that Stepanek outplayed Roger. Especially when I think he's a lesser player than Roger - duh.

So yeah, I hope Lopez wins, though it's unlikely. Stepanek has mad volley skills, but gosh, he is unpleasant to look at. I can't believe Martina Hingis actually dated him once. Seriously.
